A Lighthouse called Kanata, a contemporary art gallery based in Tokyo, Japan, presents “In Praise of Shadows – The Contemporary Japanese Aesthetics of A Lighthouse called Kanata”. Kanata works extensively with international artists, thereby inviting them to respond to the unique context for contemporary art influenced by Japanese aesthetics and culture.

By challenging Western-based parameters of what contemporary art is perceived to be through the rediscovery of aesthetic traditions within Japanese art, Kanata expands the possibilities of contemporary art from a uniquely Eastern perspective, expressed through an emphasis on the concept of beauty within material and technique.

For the gallery’s first pop-up in NYC since 2018, Kanata has assembled a serene selection of new work by leading artists such as Sueharu Fukami, Ken Mihara, Niyoko Ikuta, Takafumi Asakura, and Kentaro Sato, among others. Several new artists such as Mayu Nakata in lacquer, Yoko Togashi in glass, and Shogo Watari in wood will also be making their state-side debuts.
